About Me
Caelan Monkman is an Ottawa-based freelance multimedia journalist.
Caelan is a writer, filmmaker, and photographer with a special interest in arts and culture reporting. His work has recently been featured in CanCulture Magazine, The Eyeopener, and Capital Current. Caelan has also worked as an Editorial Assistant and Associate Producer for CBC News Network’s national television programming.
Caelan has years of publishing and copy-editing experience, having formerly been the Arts & Culture Editor for The Eyeopener and the Music Editor and Managing Editor at CanCulture Magazine.
Caelan graduated with distinction from Toronto Metropolitan University in 2024 with a Bachelor of Journalism and a minor in Music & Culture. While there, he studied International News Reporting at the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX), where he reported on topics ranging from the EU Parliament’s AI legislation to the history of Copenhagen’s LGBTQ+ community.
Along with his freelance work, Caelan is currently completing his Master of Journalism at Carleton University. Beyond his studies, Caelan enjoys writing, filming, and producing short-form documentary films. His documentary The 25th Hour: One of Canada's most accessible campuses?, received the Marginalized Community Reporting Award at the 2026 JHM Awards for Excellence in Student Journalism. He also pursues audio production and is presently working on two episodes of the third season of Farm Radio International’s Nature Answers podcast.
